"You can't handle the truth"

Well, you're right, I can't handle the fact that sooo many people have said to me this week regarding my knee injury, "well, what do you expect, at your age, you shouldn't be running".

Excuse ME??

At my age?? What exactly should I be doing at "my age"??

Trust me when I say that I have NOT had a typical life.

Why the hell should I have a typical old age.

Shut UP.

Believe me, I would sooner go out doing something I like to do, rather than sit on a couch waiting to wither up and die.

Now, back to my normally scheduled blog!

My knee injury is due to a combination of accumulated injuries over my life. Yes, it is my knee that has had two previous surgeries and yes, I was pushing the proverbial envelope by adding a little too much cycling to my already busy schedule.

My fault, I've got big shoulder's and yes, I know that I was "over training" so to speak.

I had xrays taken and the meniscus and bones seem fine, however there was a shadow that the nurse practitioner couldn't explain.

She then proceeded to tell me I was too old to be running and that it was my IT band. GAH!!!

I said let me see the xrays and then told her that from the looks of it, the problem was my patella (I had to show her where part of my patella is missing from surgery) and not IT and that the swelling is exactly where patella tendinitis and soft tissue damage would occur. She then took another look and said maybe you're right! So, then we looked through the Internet and yes, it is that and then some.

So, basically take two Advil and call me in the morning sort of horse shit....

I'm icing, taking Advil, using compression and elevation, I'm even sitting here at the office with my leg up on my garbage pail. yada, yada...

My S.I. joint and back are still giving me issues, and I'm guessing that is where all this stemmed from.

Oh well, but I'm okay, really, I've hurt myself worse in the past.

The only thing pissing me off right now is everyone telling me I'm too old to be doing this....

Life's fun if you don't weaken,

Lily

You had to help the Nurse Practitioner with the diagnosis? Hmmmm... You are only too old if you weaken :-)

Don't listen to those yahoos... WE know you're not too old. :)

Just take care of that knee and get back on the roads.

Girlfriend, carry a big-ass stick and beat the next person who says that to you. Or even looks like they might say it.

Rest and heal and do not give those words any more headspace. Those who said it are just jealous.

love ya!

I can't believe that someone said that you. Way to NOT weaken! You rock. :)

Yeah don't let well-meaning but uninformed people spoil your fun. Sedentary people have just as many knee problems as people who exercise (bike, run, whatever) habitually. From what I've seen in the literature, there is no direct cause/effect relationship between exercise (at any age) and knee injuries.

LOL, nobody puts Baby in a corner......... I tell myself the same thing everyday. Damn, I'm too old for this.

Laurel, you are not too old for this. Young people, sedentary people...can all have similar ailments. A friend called me crazy and obsessed this week. I personally think they are just jealous that they don't have the motivation to do half of what we are doing.

Of course you're too old for this.
But then again you're too young to sit on the shelf and wait to die. Each of us has exactly one special moment when we are exactly the correct age for any specific activity.
We only get to do each activity once at that perfect time and then must move on.
This goes too for those who are telling you you are too old.
Their time for that was actually Dec 17, 1987, at 10:37 am.
Anyone who says so now is way too old to be saying such things and should be informed of their transgression.

Keep telling them to shut up girl! They don't know!

If you are still breathing, you are NOT too old! Sounds like the Nurse Whatever is too ignorant to be practicing medicine. Tell the haters to get back on the couch where they belong and you go for a run. If you are too old for anything, you are too old to listen to knuckleheads try and tell you not to run. :-)

I would say: Dump the doc. If the kiddo needs help and doesn't know that running is good for all ages, what's the use of seeing them?

stay strong and don't listen to them, you'll prove them wrong :) hugs, and hope you feel better soon :D Keep resting, and you'll be back in no time.

The world is full of morons. Too old, my ass. And that's why they're just sitting there gaining weight and watching their dreams slip away while you're out there living yours.

Have a restful and healthy weekend, L.

LOL.. never a good sign if you need to read the x-rays for 'em.

Hang in there.. no one is too old. That's horseshit.

can you go to an art chiro? look at www.activerelease.com and see if you can find a chiro in your area that specilizes in art. and get a foam roller.

AND you need a bike fit. if you are riding your bike a lot and your fit is wrong, you will fuck your knees up big time. get to a bike shop and ask if they do bike fits, and spend the money to get one.

sending healing thoughts....

"what the hell do you expect me to do, die of old age"?

tell the naysayers to kiss your butt! :)

If you're too old, I'm too fat. (My doc. told me you're not built to run. Fuck 'em.)

I know someone who went to see a Dr. at the Merivale Sports Med clinic. There is also one in Barrhaven. Might be worth seeing if they can fit you in. They might shed some light and help you find a way to heal up? (Just a thought.)

Don't listen to people who are berating you for remaining active. They're just jealous.

Hope the knee heals up soon!

Simply put.. you are never too old. You have every right to do whatever you please. I love your attitude. My mom always ask me to quit my running. Like you, I refused to sit on the couch. As for me, I am going to continue running till I hit the coffin. That is the bloody truth! So be it!

Vickie said...

Just who are they calling OLD?? 55 is the new 35, right? I'm with you, not accepting that "too old" crap. Unless of course it comes to some of the fashions or bar hopping all weekend, or, you get the idea. Being active at any age comes with some limitations, but definitely not stopping certain activities just because we reach a certain age. Age is all in your head.

I've dealt with IT issues many times. Stretch, stretch, and THEN, STRETCH AGAIN. It does heal. Keep running! ;)

I have to know, how many spare tires was the NP sporting?

The last nurse that I encountered during a routine (nothign wrong) physical told me "at your weight you shouldn't be running."

It took everything in my power to not spout off "at your weight you shouldn't be speaking"

triguyjt said...

would you please wise up and act your age!!!

Darn it!!!!

Did you HEAR me????

Kilroy said...

Well if your age is in question just start lying to them about your age ... If my body can do it ... I'm pretty certain yours can handle it. After all, you didn't spend the eighties trying to burn out your lungs and fry your brain!

Lily on the Road said...

Kilroy,

No I did that in the 60's and 70's. LOL....

Glad you stopped by!! I MISS you!

Sunshine said...

Oh my.. a surgeon wanted to do my knee. You can do Fargo Marathon.. but you won't finish, he said.
I have done about 10 marathons since.. and turned 70 in January.

Wishing you lots of happy running.

Well I am available for coffee, or breakfast most Sundays ... somewhere about 4 - 6 hours after 08:30 hours. For the right breakfast companion I would even be willing to forgo the 45 minu8tes on the bike after my run.

That is my way of saying I miss you too ...
